The North Carolina 1st District runs along the Virginia Border from Granville County in the Northwest to Perquimans County in the Northeast, and extends South to Jones County. Major Towns include Elizabeth City, Roanoke Rapids, Henderson, Rocky Mount, Greenville, Washington, Wilson, Goldsboro, Kinston and New Bern. The Demographics of the District are changing rapidly as the Inner Banks experiences explosive growth.

In the last 10 years the District has become significantly more Republican, nearly doubling. Demographic breakdown has moved from overwhelmingly black to nearly equal. Gender breakdown has become less predominantly female, but still is not as blanced as population overall.
